You have a rather large choice between a number of terms, depending
on whether you are thinking of _tremolo_ in it's (assumed?)
historical meaning of a fluctuation of intensity (with or without a
reiteration of the note) and _vibrato_, that is, a fluctuation of
pitch not amounting to a complete change of note. For the former the
French use(d), according to Donington, the terms "Balancement",
"Souspir", "Verre Cassé", "Martèlement" - and "trillo"(Brossard; as
something imported from Italy). But all of these in connection with
(italian) vocal music, not instrumental. For the latter: Battement,
Flattement, Pincé, Plainte, Souspir, Tremblement mineur, Verre cassé,
Aspiration, Balancement (possibly all with slightly different methods
of execution?). The terminology for such "improvements in the tone"
is not at all clear today and may not have been completely clear even
then, and may certainly have varied from place to place or from
country to country. Any good music encyclopedia can give you more
details on the various terms, the authors using them, and their
(assumed) execution.
