My 2-cents are that the brackets complicate the
score and are unnecessary. If you're working with a living composer simply have
them OK your edits and they becomes a part of the composition. If not, a
simple note on the conductore score would suffice.
If it's a scholarly edition in which you want
credit for the edits then you could include the brackets (ugh!). An alternative
is to asterisk them and include a note, which is much less obtrusive. The small
addition to the marks' footprints probably wouldn't have a bearing on whatever
regular rules for placement you use.

Subject: [Finale] Editorial dynamic marks
and margins (or alignments)
When I add editorial dynamics (i.e. such "p" or "f" that were
obviously meant but got left out by the composer) I seem to have an issue with
alignments.
I put them in brackets or parentheses in a hanging format but
somehow it always looks unattractive. Typically the composer always would have
a dymanic
mark in the first violin and or cello, so I need to add two more (in the
2nd violins and violas). Typically, this happens 90 percent of the time at the
start of a new measure.
It looks even worse when there is a grace note that's starting the
measure too.
Anyone have any suggestions on a way to make such a layout look nicer?
