For editorial dynamic markings, I simply use a smaller typeface (18 pt.), which is very clear, takes *less* space than normal, and is completely unobtrusive in performance. I only use brackets for actual text, such as "con sord."

I find Finale's default alignments even for ordinary dynamics to be so imperfect that I simply don't bother with them. Only very seldom do I see a dynamic, at any size, appear in the place I would want it to be.
