Well, if the repeats are to be followed because they're there, what does "if you want" have anything to do with it? Shouldn't the wrong notes be played also because they're there? Or does "if you want" apply to the taking of repeats on D.C. or D.S. also?
In reality, we all have our own lines in the sand which we won't cross over. For some all road-map issues, including taking repeats on D.C. or D.S., is the line that won't be crossed but notes we feel are wrong can be changed. For others, notes should be played because they're in the master's hand but repeats can be optional. For still others, everything written in the master's hand should be taken as gospel with no changes allowed, and for yet others, reliance on one's own musical instinct for both road-map issues and pitches/rhythms is perfectly alright.
And ultimately I don't care what others do as long as they don't think I'm musically inferior for using what discretion I choose to exercise. I certainly don't look down on others for their adherence to or straying from the written text, as long as it works musically and communicates what I feel the composers' intentions really were.
