I apologize if I have missed an earlier posting with this assertion--I've had to pass over a lot of list mail without reading recently. And I also apologize for not having the actual citations for what I am referring to.

That said: Christopher Hogwood and many other performers who are attempting to discover what "the composers' intention really were" rely on information from contemporary sources regarding as many aspects of performance as are available, among other things. There actually are contemporary sources that say quite clearly that repeats are to be observed in da capos. I'm sorry I can't recall who this was at the moment--it may have been Koch.

Of course, one does not follow these sources without exercising one's informed judgment any more than one follows the notes in scores slavishly.   I have heard and read what Christopher Hogwood has to say, and on the basis of this, it is not my impression that he does so, though someone else's impression might be different.

What I can tell you is that there is theoretical evidence for the way he does this, though I can't tell you exactly what it is right this minute, and that Hogwood typically relies on such evidence, tempered by a very well-informed judgment.

I am praying that all of my subjects and verbs are in agreement, even if my opinions are not...
