All of the systems have been locked (mass edit), but the strange problem persists. With various kinds of subterfuges, I've managed to delete all the unnecessary measures but one--but deleting that one measure skews the format of the 9 following pages. I've tried inserting a page break, but that doesn't work either.
I think the underlying problem has to do with the extra staves that were added through the entire piece, even though I only intended them for 4 pages. Optimizing has only hidden the unnecessary staves; they're still there & problematic, I think. Is there any way to add extra staves to only designated systems? This is not the problem here -- "Automatic Update Layout" does not (by default) *change* the layout, it only ensures there are no nasty surprises when it comes time to print the part.
