Okay, here's a head-to-head price comparison between the Dell
Precision 490 and the new Mac Pro.
I had to use a *very* expensive video card in both machines (NVIDIA
Quadro FX 4500 512MB) to get the closest possible match between the
two configurations, but here's the price for both machines:
Mac Pro: $4,228.00
Two 2.66GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon
1GB (2 x 512MB)
250GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s
NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 512MB, Stereo 3D (2 x dual-link DVI)
1 x SuperDrive
Both Bluetooth 2.0+EDR and AirPort Extreme
Apple Keyboard and Mighty Mouse - U.S. English
Mac OS X - U.S. English
Dell Precision 490: $4,909
Dell Precision Workstation 490 Desktop - 64bit:
Dual Core Intel® Xeon® Processor 5150 2.66GHz, 4MB L2,1333
2nd Processor:
Dual Core Intel® Xeon® Processor 5150 2.66GHz, 4MB L2,1333
Genuine Windows® XP Professional, x64 Edition with Media
Intel Hyper-Threading:
Hyper-Threading feature preset to ON. Can be disabled/enabled in BIOS.
512MB PCIe x16 nVidia Quadro FX 4500, Dual DVI or Dual VGA or DVI + VGA
1GB, DDR2 SDRAM FBD Memory, 667MHz, ECC (2 DIMMS)
Hard Drive Configuration:
C1 All SATA drives, Non-RAID, 1 or 2 drive total configuration
Boot Hard Drive:
250GB SATA 3.0Gb/s,7200 RPM NCQ Hard Drive with 8MB DataBurst Cache™
CD-ROM, DVD, and Read-Write Devices:
16X DVD+/-RW w/ Cyberlink PowerDVD™ and Roxio Creator™ Dell Ed
No Floppy Drive
No Monitor Option
USB Entry Quietkey, No Hot Keys
Dell USB 2-Button Mechanical Mouse with Scroll
Sound Card and 1394:
1394a Controller Card
If go with the stock video cards -- NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256MB on
the Mac and 256MB PCIe x16 nVidia Quadro FX on the Dell -- the stock
Mac Pro is $2578 (once you add wireless) and the Dell is $3984.
If I made a mistake and this is a flawed comparison for some reason,
I'll be happy to be corrected, but it sure looks to me like the Mac
Pro is anywhere from $680 to $1400 less expensive than the equivalent
hardware from Dell.
Cheers,
- Darcy

As far as I can tell, it looks like the most comparable Dell is the

It doesn't have as many HD bays as the Mac Pro, but it does support
up to 32 GB of memory -- that is, for those with $29,370 to blow on
RAM alone!
