Comparisons are messy. If you tend to build your own machines as I do, then
a basic Dell would do it because you get a solid pre-tested box
inexpensively. Or you could go to a barebones box maker with a good
reputation. (I used Advanced Design of Kentucky.) That way you can build to
taste, sometimes less expensively and more under your own control. And Dell
is expensive. The upsell price for the high-end video card at Dell is over
street price -- and same goes for the other internal upgrades (hard drives,
etc.). On the other hand, the equivalent nVidia GeForce 7300GT 512MB that
was mentioned is streeted under $150.

Actually, the only branded computer I own is a Dell laptop, which is
adequate enough, though not impressive. Not Dell's fault. I just don't like
laptops yet. They have a long way to go in terms of the physical user
interface. (I loathe using Finale on the laptop.)
