Don't invite problems -- the vast majority of Finale users don't have printing problems. It's only a very small number, and then only in very special circumstances.

I've been using Finale since around 1994 or so and outside of my own stupidity I've had no printing problems with Finale.

I use strictly the truetype fonts, though, as I think most users do.

Good grief. I am a new Finale user....using 2007. Just getting
started. I sure hope I don't have the kinds of printing problems you
speak of or I will be extremely dissappointed.

Here's what I did: I added a few glyphs I regularly need into empty slots
of the Maestro T1 font. On the screen, everything is fine. It also prints
out fine on the HP printer. But when I print to PDF, the music font is gone
and everything is blank. All the other T1 fonts of the score are there. I
checked that embedding was allowed. I uninstalled it and reinstalled it. I
rebooted. But still no luck. I know I've done this before, and I regularly
use fonts edited and even created by myself. Any idea where I went wrong
this time?

Thanks, Dennis
Dennis,
I use Finale 2005, and, I've been having postscript problems -- as has a
friend of mine using postscript from Finale 2006 (both on Mac). One
friend
was trying to use Subito's service for printing, made pdfs of his
orchestral
scores. They came back without instrument names, and with all 3-slash
tremolos missing the middle slash.

My way of working -- going back to the bad old days when Finale had no
decent page layout -- is to create EPS files of each page, put them into
Pagemaker, and print from there. Finale's way of creating EPS (at least
as
of FinMac 2005-2006) is flawed. My largest problems have been with
engraver
tuplets, which seem to disappear, not all the time, but randomly, most
often
when the right side of a bracket has been extended. By finding these
through proofreading of eps files, and replacing each with non-engraver
tuplets, the problem goes away.

When I've tried making pdf files directly from Finale, using the OSX
printer
option (I have the most recent OSX), I get the missing middle slash in
tremolos, and some other things drop out as well. I've also tried
Finale's
export to postscript command (to make a .ps file), and that drops out
other
things.

The reason I still work this way is that I find Finale messes up pages
over
time in little ways -- most particularly mid-measure clefs jumping
around.
I like to have a page exactly the way I want it, and then a permanent
record
of it that is not version reliant. Also, using Pagemaker files that link
to
a single set of eps files, corrections mean making an eps of the new page
only, and I have easy access to a lot of layout possibilities that
require
multiple steps in Finale (every time).

I will soon be switching to an intel mac, which means I lose Pagemaker
(since intel macs won't support classic, and Pagemaker is a classic
program). So I've been learning InDesign. A new problem crops up. When
InDesign links to Finale eps files, they print all fonts in italics! If
I
create a pdf file from InDesign, using their pdf export function, all is
well -- and the most recent Adobe reader has decent control of printing
and
resizing. This makes a set of silly multiple steps -- export Finale to
EPS,
put those into InDesign, proofread for tuplets, export that to pdf. But
it
seems to work.

I hear from the press releases that Finale 2007 has "fixed" previous eps
problems. Is that true?? That would make an upgrade worth it for me --
though I'll probably upgrade anyway after a maintenance release comes
out.
