They are annoying (I might not go so far as to say obnoxious) simply because they force me to take time and effort to deal with them, and i get absoloutely nothing in return. They get dumped into my "Incoming Attachments" folder, and before I can delete the message they came with (when I'm done with it) I have to go find them and individually delete them, or they just accumulate. THAT is annoying! (Same thing with the vcard thingies.) I'd go so far as to say that ANY unrequested attachments are the equivalent of SPAM, even though they are not bulk mailings.

I suppose that if I understood more about my computer I might be able to filter them out, but I don't and that's that.
