Comrie claimed that his opinion was confirmed by those of the people doing the 
proof-checking for the publication: a mind-boggling task, comparing about half 
a million numbers with the hand-written calculations, so there was a lot of 
combined experience.  However, I suspect that the tables were produced before 
operational research was invented, so I don't suppose there were double-blind 
comparisons with a control group.
