Omitting the "lack of" or "without" was just a slip-up in my typing my last post. I did understand that you meant just the opposite.

Well, whatever it was, I was confused by your original post, where you seemed to be saying that the existence of fixed-width numerals was an "aberration". I understood your point after the following post in which you specified that the aberration was the unavailability of anything *but* fixed-width numerals.
