I hope so. The other thing about putting it online is that it can be 
updated and annotated. For instance, a PDF of the printed version 
could be put up, and an HTML blog or wiki could be put up alongside 
it so that the editors could add additional information as it came 
in.

But I must admit that I've found musicologists in general highly 
suspicious of such endeavors -- I can't get anyone interested in my 
ideas in collaborating on scholarship. They are too suspicious of 
losing credit for their work (e.g., tenure committees won't give it 
the same weight as a conference paper).

This makes me sad, but surely it will change as younger and more 
Internet-savvy musicologists come up into the ranks. Unfortunately, 
most of the newer musicologists I know of are completely uninterested 
in source studies and editing. :(
