out of curiosity, in jazz notation, what is standard for say cymbal notation, with nothing else (no BD or whatever), would you still notate it stems up (it sounds like it by your comments)?
Layer 1, stems up, above the staff - 1st space above ("X" notehead) for closed hi-hat, 1st ledger line above ("X" notehead) for open hat or crash.
