[Finale] Left barline question

I'm working on a set of songs with varying instrumentation (alto flute, 
soprano, alto, string quintet, string quartet). The first song is for 
soprano and solo violin. When I optimise the staves, Finale puts no 
braces on the staves. The composer however insists on having the staves 
braced. Who is right, Finale or the composer? I couldn't find anything 
on the subject in my music notation handbooks.
In another situation, when the alto flute plays solo (a ritornello), he 
wants both a left barline and a brace. Is he right?
