I don't understand what you mean. When I do it, the staff lines are visible on screen and in my printout. See <http://aaron.sherber.com/files/circle.png>. The first note has an articulation, and the second one has an expression.
In the Shape Designer, make sure the Fill for your shape is set to None rather than White.
