It's like the vinyl versus CD debate. The vinyl is CAPABLE of better fidelity, but it so rarely happens that in practice you are better off with a CD.
If the band CAN sound good without amplification, definitely forgo it, as it opens up a can of worms that only the best sound man can get through (nice mixed metaphor, there!)
