And don't forget that making any money as a composer depends more on
someone's ability to sell rather than compose. The previously mentioned John
Eaton has won several 6-figure awards, and not becuase he writes anything
anybody likes (at least not anyone I've ever talked to).

And  also don't forget that many music students have to take theory classes
regardless of specialty. Thankfully you can't say that about composition. A
couple years ago I wrote a 45-second motet for the Reforemed Jewish temple
in Fort Worth. I had the devil's time convincing the music director there
(who wanted me to scotch anything that moved outside of pablum tertian
triads) that it was not a theory assignment to be corrected and re-written.
And as it turned out the work pleased the rabbi and the worship director
even though the music director thought it was crap. Can't please everyone.
