Aha. My precise situation, along with Oboe/English Horn. And it is of course because the "/" character in Unix denotes a subfolder. Doh! And such a boneheaded error message for it. And so easy to fix: a typical example of criminal neglect of existing features by the current bunch in charge of MM.

The same naming issue is undoubtedly what prevents saving as PS, too, although there is no error message for PS files. The file simply does not appear.

The workaround I used is to Preview it, then save it with the name I want. Having seen Darcy's explanation I at least feel relief that my file is not weirdly corrupted.
