About a month ago, I saw spam drop off by half, and now it's down to
1/3 of what it was just a couple of months ago. I don't know what's
happening, but it's certain less than it once was. Maybe the spammers
are finally purging my inactive email addresses (99% of my spam comes
to my old bway.net accounts, which though still active, have not been
used in public forums for more than 15 months).

I would doubt this has any effect, because most of the FROM addresses
on these are forged. I get bounces for spam that's been sent out
under one of my email addresses, and someone complaining to my ISP
would be wasting their time, as I didn't send it in the first place.

You really have to read the headers of the email to know where the
spam is coming from, and even then, it's tricky to distinguish forged
headers from the real thing.

The best thing to do with spam is NOTHING. Don't respond to it in any
way, either reporting it to an ISP or unsubscribing. Just delete it.
