Andrew Stiller, a few weeks back I said some recent scholarship was heading toward alto, tenor and bass trombones all being in Bb in the 18th and 19th centuries. I intended to send you some links at the time but did not. Here are some

<http://www.trombone-society.org.uk/resources/articles/creation.php> (scroll down to "The 18th century bass trombone") Summarized from Howard Weiner's research.

<http://www.trombone-society.org.uk/resources/articles/shifrin/shifrin01.php> (Ken Shifrin: The Alto Trombone in the Orchestra: 1800-2000)

jump to Part I: The Alto-Tenor-Bass Trombone Trio, chapter 2.1 and part II for pertinent stuff, but it's all good.

Howard Weiner takes issue with Ken Shifrin over something - implies his research is sloppy, but I haven't figured out what - it seems to me they basically agree on nearly everything, and have both done excellent work. I heard Ken give an excellent lecture several years ago summarizing much of this - he has done his homework.
