Place the shape with a metatool. Each time you place it, a new instance is created. For example, if you have a box, you can select the expression tool, press SHIFT+B, and it will open the expression dialog. Choose the shape, and OK your way out. Now if you hold down B and click, the shape will appear, and you can edit that one separately.
