This is all true, though slightly incomplete. First, please note that
DOCX is merely the default for Word 07, not the only format it can
save in. You can change this default so that Word saves all its
documents in DOC format. (The same thing happened, I believe, when
Word 97 came out and was incompatible with Word 95.)
Second, your comment about equations and special symbols probably
doesn't affect all that many people, as a proportion of Word users.
(Although it's interesting in light of our frequent discussions here
about backwards compatibility in Finale.)
Third, users of older Office versions on Windows can download a
compatibility pack from Microsoft which will let them work with the
new file version. That pack is available here:

Finally, as the article you link to notes, there are third-party
converters that will run on Mac, and I imagine they will do a good
job converting non-complex Word documents.
