This silliness has been around for a while, mostly because publishers used
to be Mac-based and didn't know what to do with them. All sorts of excuses
were offered. (That was the case in Vermont until the printers got up to
speed.)

I've published a magazine and several books using TT fonts and commercial
printers. Only one objected until I actually drove to their plant and
helped them understand what to do.

You can convert TT to Type 1 and no one will be the wiser, and you
publisher will never notice. Get ttf2pfa and refont (both run in DOS
boxes).
