I tend to agree with David, unless bandwidth is at an extremely tight premium.
The only advantage MIDI files gives you is very small file size, but you give up all control over the sound. It will play back with whatever crappy built-in sounds they happen to have (Mac users will probably have QuickTime, which would at least give you some foreknowledge of how it will sound there.) Even a low-resolution MP3 will give them a good idea of the sound as you hear it, and it won't be dependent on playback devices.
