I think you're confusing diiferent Vienna schools.
Korngold studied with Zemlinksy, and he also crossed paths with
Mahler and R Strauss. Max Steiner was very close to Strauss. There's
definitely a strong connection between the community of opera
composers in Vienna and the community of film composers in California
some time around the 1930s, but I don't think Schönberg was part of it.
Schönberg did later teach in California, but I don't think his
students (eg, Cage, Harrison) were connected with Hollywood.
It's a simplification, of course, but I tend to think of early film
composers in two groups: the Viennese group, and the group centered
around Castelnuovo-Tedesco.
