That IS a tough tune! I've heard many singers massacre it.
The problem is, it ISN'T a tune. It's a recitative (to take this
thread back where it started)!!!!
The Soliloquy in "Carousel" (which we've never done) goes in and
out of recit. too, and that takes a good actor AND a good
musician. So does "If I Were A Rich Man," and I've heard that
massacred, too.
Absolutely true on all counts. What I meant to say, though, it is
that "My Time of Day" is inordinately hard to pitch. Leaps to
chromatically altered notes, some of which resolve and some don't,
and constant modulation make it one of the hardest to pitch pieces in
the Broadway repertoire. I was using the term "tune" in the jazz
sense, meaning a piece of music, not a melody.
