I run into this kind of thing all the time in my music. It is very common in jazz, for example, in drum and percussion parts.

You can write the pattern once, then as many .//. signs as will fit onto the system, then restate the pattern at the start of the next system. Clinton Roemer suggests this. I think it is essential that every measure played be visible, so a sign like " .//. play 59 times" would not be acceptable.

I agree completely, but one thing I actually HATE is having the pattern repeated at the start of every system. If it's a repeated pattern it's a repeated pattern, and the number of repeats should not start over. There is, however, a good argument for repeating the pattern at rehearsal letters, if the rehearsal letters are at places when the ensemble might be asked to start there.

Actually I can't find that in Roemer, at least not in Chapter 6.

Look in Chapter 15. He says to rewrite the pattern on each new system, so the eye doesn't have to jump back a line.

He doesn't actually mention how to number two-bar repeats, but when he talks about 1 measure repeats he says to number the measures, so I extrapolated from that. Frankly, that is what I would prefer if I were reading it.
