I much prefer to have a complete phrase, between two structural rehearsal letters, on a line, if it fits without crowding. I've long done that with drum parts, giving instructions like "Play 24 bars same," which in a way speaks to Dennis's question.
I don't like the idea that each measure played is not visible. It makes the piece almost unrehearsable if the player is unable to pinpoint a measure, if for no other reason than to note a cue.
In Finale it is very easy to write out 8 or 12 bars of one-bar repeats (or in the case of drum parts, slashes) over 3 or 2 systems, numbering them so the player can take a glance and know how many measures to play before the next rehearsal letter. It's one of the things I love that Finale did for my students (and for me!)
