I eagerly checked out the sample PDFs
( http://www.behindbarsnotation.co.uk/contents/ ) and was disappointed to
see inconsistency. Look at the time signatures images in "Size and
placing"
and then look at "Placing time-signature changes" on the same page (which
does not use any of the preferred sizes). It would seem that one would
want
a "preferred size" to be used throughout the book, especially on a page
dealing with time signatures.

Give me a break! Sure you can see slight spaces between the tops or
bottoms of some of the numbers and the lines of the staff -- if you're
viewing at 1200% !
If you view it at 100% or even 200%, the spaces are all but invisible.
Print out the page in question and then let us know how disappointed you
are.

I looked at the excerpt and saw nothing to complain about.

I also nothing to compel me to buy the book -- the excerpt didn't contain anything earth-shaking that I didn't already know or couldn't figure out, based on the principle that notation should be clear and easily understood.
