In fact, we monoglot Americans make a far greater effort than most cultures to pronounce foreign words in a foreign way.

germans make the most consistent and successful effort in my experience. most foreign words are pronounced fairly respectably close to the original language by germans of a range of social backgrounds and levels of education.

my favourite ones in english are kra-ssahnt (croissant) and lawn-ger-eh (lingerie).

my experience in north america has certainly not been as you suggest in regards to canadians or americans being comfortable with foreign words (or concepts, films, ideas for that matter...) i more often find a fear of improper pronunciation that leads rather to an avoidance of any real attempt at propoer pronunciation and acceptance that the word may be butchered when pronounced.
