Serpent and Contrabassoon - so the part was to sound in octaves, as written and 8ba. Same as in the Reformation Symphony.
Serpent's modern replacement would be euphonium, but serpent is more nasal sounding. Contrabassoon still around. If you don't have one, CBCL can work, but not as direct a match with euphonium. Euph/Tuba would be logical combo, although tuba is stronger than CBssn.
