Sorry, I misspoke! It's the UPPER handle that stays selected after entry, so 
you can nudge it left or right immediately using the left-right arrows. Using 
the metatool R and clicking the bottom note (or a little lower, I find) makes 
it the right length upon entry, so I rarely have to adjust length, unless it is 
occurring over two staves.
