I find that the length is consistently one link longer than the length I 
prefer, with correct vertical placement.  I do adjust the length using the up 
arrow on the bottom handle. My metatool is from my own templates, so it's 
possible I changed something from the original, but I don't think so.  More 
likely you and I just have different length preference.

Also, I want the wiggles of the shape to align neatly with the staff lines, and 
I can't get an exact placement with a single click, so that's why I use the 
lasso selection.
