I can certainly sympathize with you, Dennis. From my brief experiment, though, where I notice a definite slowdown in Finale2011, even with only 1078 fonts, but everything works as I would expect it to (and as it does in other programs) in the same situation, I think you might find that the bug has been resolved.
Perhaps someone with an equally large number of fonts as you have will try the experiment. It's important for anybody who tries the experiment, though, to uncheck the box in the Create Expression dialog which restricts the font selection to just 2 (at least on my installation, that's what showed up) and with the box unchecked it enables the user to select from any font on the system.
