FYI, I use Robert Puff's method of putting rests of various suitable values in measures with slashes. When things get too crowded with quarter rests, I put eighth rests in to spread things out. Sometimes a combination of eighths and quarters works well. Depends on the width of the symbols and how many there are in the measure. I agree that including chords in music spacing produces ugly results.
