i suppose this has more to do with percussion maps (i actually don't use them so don't see the problem). i use staff styles and clef changes for pitched bits on unpitched instruments. clefs can be hidden in the SC as needed also with a staff style. maybe too many layers of workaround for your needs, but works for me.
