A question about notation for harmonics came up
last week on the viola list, and I'd like to
share a resource that I was directed to:
http://www.music.indiana.edu/departments/academic/composition/style-guide/index.shtml

This is a style guide posted on line by the
Composition Department of the Indiana University
Jacobs School of Music, and it's very solid and
well written. And down a number of screens is a
discussion of the notation of harmonics that
seems absolutely accurate and about as
comprehensive as one can get. It goes into
excellent detail about the gamut of natural
harmonics, and recognizes that artificial
harmonics not just of the 4th but also of the
5th, major 3rd, minor 3rd, and even major and
minor 2nd are quite possible (although no one can
claim that they are EASY!).

Highly recommended, even though it DOES recommend
the use of non-standard 10" x 13" paper for
orchestral parts!
