And if you're printing on 9x12 paper with 1" margin all around, that 
gives you 7" across of printable music and 10" up and down of printable 
music, which is the same as 8.5x11 paper with .75" margins left and 
right and .5" margins top and bottom.

So why not print on 8.5x11 paper with .75" margins left and right and 
.5" margins top and bottom?  It's much more common paper, at least in 
the U.S., it's available in small packages at heavier weights so that 
even home-publishers can print decent parts, it's handled nicely by all 
laser printers, at least in the U.S.

I don't understand (and have never undersood) the need for larger paper 
if one isn't going to use the extra paper for printing more music per page.
