I ran my tests again on 2012 and it looks like it DID have this same 
behavior at 2012.  I guess when I tested earlier, the expressions must 
have ended up underneath the slash symbol.  As far as I can tell, the 
only way to suppress this display is to go in an individually hide the 
articulations.
