I opened a ticket with MakeMusic about this and got some good information. They've seen this problem when the file name contains diacritical marks. The weird part of this is that my setup suddenly started working without me doing much of anything. So for those that are seeing this problem like I was, try the following:
1. Open a new document and save it immediately as Audio. 2. Rename (a copy of) your source doc to something like x.musx and try exporting audio from it. Perhaps one of these two steps "woke up" my ability to save audio files, because I can't get it to fail any more with any of the files that were failing a couple of days ago. I'm using Fin14.5 on 10.9. Also, I may have rebooted since then, though I don't recall it if so.
