AutoHotkey can be used in these situations - at least on Windows. Here is a demo that does just what you asked for: it shows three green/red lights for the current layer, the active layer only mode and the currently selected Windows language. http://angermueller.com/rmc/homepage/autohotkey_finale_scripts.htm Download is not available yet, but I will make it public soon.
