my experience has been that starting from normal noteheads and changing individual noteheads as needed is the easiest way to go. that said, i NEVER use finale's percussion maps and don't use playback for percussion ever.
then it is a question of the font you are using for the percussion and you may have to set the font for the perc to engraver extras or something. and that is one of the many reasons i created my own fonts, starting way back in 2002 :-) http://newmusicnotation.com/fonts/neueweise_charactercharts.pdf i still think you can (and should) use normal noteheads. if the staves for perc are organized well there is no need. the performer then sees a consistent staff "complex" and knows where every single instrument / group of instruments is located. for example, i have often used the 5-line as a basis (for pitched instruments and sometimes for 5 WB, for ex.) supplemented with a 3-line staff for other instruments. with some planning it has usually been possible to reduce the number of staves and increase the clarity of what i have come across in perc parts. as a percussionist, you know how much of a pain in the arse it can be... :-) here is an example for 3 tgl, 4 tbl and vibes with no conflicts. uppers use 3-line staves differently, so even if you combined tbl/tgl for a short complex passage there is a clear distinction between the instruments. ---o--- ---o--- ---o--- o ------ o ------ o ------ o --F#-- ----- C ----- --Gb-- ----- >But if I if I understood you correctly, that gives me the opposite >of what I want. > >By turning off the percussion settings in Score Manager that just >gives the range of usual noteheads & no circle with an "x" within it. > >As a percussionist I have long held that there is no need for >alternate noteheads.
