Ahhh! I had been starting LyX from an OroborOSX Launch menu script when I was getting the problems with previewing and exporting. When I start LyX from an xterm window or run my xinitrc and start it from the gnome menubar, everything works fine. I guess I need to analyze the Launch menu script.
