10.2 installed in a new-formatted partition, upgraded to 10.2.1
Fink installed from scratch following the sourceforge directions to the letter
fink --version gives me:
        Package manager version: 0.10.0.cvs
        Distribution version: 0.4.0.cvs

After the basic installation, I tried "fink install gnome-core".
This, of course, involves *many* files to download and compile. All
downloaded uneventfully. Several compiled uneventfully, but on some
compilations they run to completion, then, as the resultant .deb is
being unpacked, I get a complete lock-up, no reaction to keyboard or
trackpad ("Wallstreet" Powerbook), transparent grey overlay with a
clear rectangle in the middle with a multilingual message to reboot
the computer.

The only way to reboot or shut down at that point is by
<Cmd><Ctl><off> (or <Fn><Ctl><Opt><Shift><off>).

After booting from Diskwarrior CD and "treating" the X partition,
then having Disk Utility repair permissions, I reboot into X.

To pick the most recent example, Fink Commander (0.4.0) tells me that

>db3-shlibs 3.3.11-11 outdated

So I tell Fink Commander to install db3-shlibs, which goes
uneventfully (tarball already downloaded, it compiles, makes .deb,
unpacks and installs the -shlibs). Fink Commander shows:

>db3-shlibs 3.3.11-11 current

It also shows:

>db3 3.3.11-11 archived
>db3-bin 3.3.11-11 archived
>db3-doc 3.3.11-11 archived

So I try having Fink Commander install db3, db3-bin, db3-doc. After
the unpacking, the installation concludes with complete lock-up, no
reaction to keyboard or trackpad, transparent grey overlay with a
clear rectangle in the middle with a multilingual message to reboot
the computer.

What sort of problems can cause this?
What can I do to fix this?
