Since you're using system-xfree86, you must be using a package from XonX or something like that.
Are you using OS 10.2? Your problem looks like what you get when you use a 10.1 version of XFree86 on 10.2. If you are indeed on 10.2, then you should either update your binary release to a 10.2 version or install the fink package.
