What I did to solve this problem was to edit the following file:
/usr/X11R6/etc/xinit/xinitrc

I changed the line "twm &" to "sawfish &".

Now, instead of XDarwin starting up using twm, it starts up using Sawfish.
Gnome now starts up using Sawfish as well (before, it used to complain
that I already had a window manager, and it'd start using twm again. I'd
have to reset sawfish as the wm every time.)

This xinitrc file also lets you change the initial windows. XDarwin always
started up with a too-large terminal window; you can change this window's
size within xinitrc.

Fink must have its own xinitrc hidden somewhere, b/c Gnome still starts up
with the too-large terminal window.
