You can do this, too, but it's safer to copy it over to your home
dirctory as .xinitrc .

If you put in "gnome-session" instead of calling a window manager
explicitly, then sawfish will also get called, if you have it installed.

Did you remove the line 

exec xterm -geometry 80x66+0+0 -name

from /usr/X11R6/etc/xinit/xinitrc?

If so, then my bet would be that a giant xterm got saved in your
gnome-session
