Yes, that is rootless.

That's what we all get when we do startx -- -quartz.

X11 then reads your .xinitrc file and starts the window manager that is specified there. This is what my .xinitrc says:

# Window Maker default X session startup script

PATH="$PATH:/sw/bin"

# If you login from xdm, uncomment this to make error messages appear
# in the console window.
#
# tail -f /Users/durandal/.xsession-errors > /dev/console &

exec wmaker

-----------

as you can see, I use WindowMaker, also installed via fink.
