I want first of all to apologize once more (for the last time, unless someone expresses annoyance in the future) for my lack of experience and the apparent stupidity of the questions I post here, and also for forgetting things I should have remembered, not having read or learned something that I should have, etc. I want also to express my sincere appreciation for the help given here and for the people who give it. I will at least try to get current questions straightened out before posting other ones. That said, I will start posting stupid questions (and yes, I know that the only stupid question is the one that isn't asked - still...). Here, how do I know whether I'm using binaries or building from source? I do have a Linux guru here in the office... and okay, I asked him and he said that I am almost certainly using binaries, that the other thing is for experienced programmers and they wouldn't have made a basic installation for ordinary people like that, or some such. Okay, so I'll boot in OS X and first try the "sudo apt-get install system-xfree86" option (fearing that the other would more likely lead me to further options I wouldn't understand or know what to do about).... But it turns out that's happened anyway. I booted in OS X and found that I didn't even know how to *launch* Fink. There's an alias called "Fink 0.5.1" in my Applications folder, but it's broken ("the original item cannot be found") and I can't find any other way to get the program going. Not to seem cowardly, but I'm thinking at this point that, being a really rank beginner unlike the "beginners" in this list, I should probably deinstall Fink and stick with X11 for the time being, if only to cut down a little on the confusion factor. The guru mentioned above recommended Fink to me, which is why I installed it even after running across X11, which I already understood to be similar in function (right?). He was in my room this morning, we launched X11, and he put it through its paces, trying a whole series of stuff he does on his Linux box. Pretty much everything worked, he said, so it doesn't seem apparent that I need Fink or should necessarily leave it on my disk. (I could always reinstall it later if the need or desire arose.) So I'll try to take care of this, I've got http://fink.sourceforge.net/faq/index.php and its article on "How can I remove all of Fink?", so I'll try running sudo rm -rf /sw in X11, since I don't know how to launch Fink.... Wow, the sw folder is *gone*, I guess that -rf means "remove folder" or something like that? Anyway I guess I've deinstalled, then, though "Almost all files installed by Fink are in /sw" makes me wonder about the few other ones. Anybody know about those? (I already deleted the broken alias.) Also, there's this: "The only exception to this rule is XFree86. If you also need to remove XFree86, additionally enter this: sudo rm -rf /usr/X11R6 /etc/X11 /Applications/XDarwin.app". If I'm going to keep running X11, I don't want to remove XFree86, right? And finally, if I didn't consciously add a "source /sw/bin/init.csh" line to my .cshrc file, do I have to remove it? That is, was the file modified in this way automatically? > You absolutely _cannot_ move any of the core X11 stuff from /usr/X11R6 > to anywhere else. As for moving fink, it is possible. See > > http://fink.sourceforge.net/faq/usage-fink.php#moving-symlink The X11 folder is even bigger and more populated than sw (was), so I'm not sure I would have done the move even if I hadn't deinstalled. Why not, though - I guess I will if I ever reinstall, thanks. > I'm not sure about a tutorial. The fink web page > (http://fink.sourceforge.net/) has some documentation. Yeah, it's good.
